Jack Stauber – The Ballad Of Hamantha lyrics
[Verse 1]
Life's extension lottery
Kind to some, but not to thee
Born with a rare and sad disease
She grew a ham where her head should be

[Pre-Chorus]
Flowing hair, she was a cutie pie
Meaty face and a lovely eye
Her dream was to be a famous star
But at the rate she was goin’, she wasn't going far

[Chorus]
Hamantha, Hamantha
You were impossible to ignore
Hamantha, Hamantha
So greedy we wanted more

[Verse 2]
Her father was a simple man
He wanted to help
"In any way that I can!"
Home from school, he watched his daughter cry
In the yard, he cursed God
And fired at the sky

[Pre-Chorus]
Flowing hair, she was a cutie pie
Meaty face and a lovely eye
Dreams in the sky, her father felt her pain
And as he shot at the clouds, it began to rain

[Chorus]
Hamantha, Hamantha
You were impossible to ignore
Hamantha, Hamantha
So greedy we wanted more

[Bridge]
Got a call from the doctor
He had some amazing news for her
He just developed a cure
If she hurried over now, he'd try it out on her

Burst out the door, she was beaming
Among the raindrops her happy tears were streaming
Finally free from her pain
But something else fell with the rain

A stray bullet shot by her father
Painlessly nested inside her
She fell to the the sidewalk, now empty
Of the life which once christened her body

[Interlude]
"Nurse
She’s... she's gone."
"Oh - oh dear."
"I left a lunch on the table in the operating room for the bereaved
A cooked ham, as is customary for these... dark situations."
"Doctor - what - which one is the - which one is the ham?"
"I - I must go, I'm on break."
"Oh dear."

[Pre-Chorus]
Flowing hair, she was a cutie pie
Meaty face and a lovely eye
At her time of death
The doc said "time to eat!"
So he took a bite out of her face meat

[Chorus]
Hamantha, Hamantha
You were impossible to ignore
Hamantha, Hamantha
So greedy we wanted more

[Post-Chorus]
Soaring infinitely through space
Hamantha's soul was graced
With a glance of our humble planet
At which she was amazed

The news of her untimely death
Had spread out near and far
And through her soul, the truth was whole
The dream had crossed the bar

Hamantha had become a star
Hamantha was finally a star
Hamantha was finally a star

She thought that she was ugly because everyone obsessively viewed and seemingly judged her. The doctor sees her face as food, the same way plastic surgeons often capitalise and ‘feed’ on young girls’ insecurities. (Mad because these things require a minimum of at least fifty words. Anyways, its a good song and make sure to lksten to the extended version of his song. )

    TW: Mental illness, suicide

The meaning of this song, at least to me, is about a someone who is different from everyone else in a very specific way (my sister is autistic and her story has been very similar). She wants to be popular and loved by people. But at this point in her life, everyone just ignores her and doesn’t pay any attention to her. Her father was a simple man. Instead of trying to help her embrace what made her different he viewed it as a curse and blamed and swore at god. This subconsciously and negatively affected Hamantha. After a while she was offered a “cure”. To my interpretation, this was not an actual cure but her own consciousness contemplating suicide. She was very unstable at this point. Her father eventually (accidentally) turned on her and had a majour outburst directed at her. That was the point where she broke, and ultimately ended her own life. The news of her untimely death would spread far and everyone would feel sympathetic for Hamantha. She would finally become the star she had always wanted to be: She would finally get the love and attention she deserved. But in the end, it took her demise to finally receive that.

I found it much like my life, though I have no disease, Im different from others and I always wanted to change that. This song is very relatable and is easy to understand what Hamantha feels like. It is a extremely catchy song so you can see why i love it so much. Great job!

Oh this one was dark for me. She felt left out and isolated for her ham of a head. Her poor lovely father only wanted to help her feel better but was so frustrated he fired that bullet into the sky. Around that same time the doctor gives her false hope, telling her that he had a "cure" for her. She runs out and is struck down by the same bullet her own father fired. I feel like in a way this song represents us and our biggest insecurities and how while people mean well, their help could be destructive and the bullet is them striking us down unintentionally. The doctor is the one who takes advantage of the brokenness of our friends and us, using it to benefit themselves.

In the end we'll become the stars we wanted to be in some weird way. We just hope it doesn't ruin us.

In the Ballad of Hamantha, Jack Stauber follows the life of a young girl named Hamantha with a “rare and sad disease” as she has a ham instead of a head. She has hopes of being a famous star. Her father wanted to help his daughter, but unable to do so, he cursed god and shot at the sky in anger. The bullets seemingly caused the sky to rain. The doctor called hamantha that day and told her that “they just developed a cure” and “if she hurried over now they’d try it out on her”. She ran out the door going to the doctors, when one of the bullets hits her in the head as it falls from the sky with the rain. She unfortunately dies at the hospital and is confused for the doctors lunch. Despite the tragic ending, it is revealed at the end that she is “soaring infinitely through space” and that she truly does become a star. The song emphasizes that sometimes dreams don’t always come true in the manner you expect, and that well intentioned actions don’t always help. It has a melancholy tone while still being funny at times.

i think, personally, that this might be about disability and the treatment of those who are disabled, especially with chronic illness or physical disabilities. as someone with a physical disability, i feel like i have a special understanding of this.
the specific attention to it being a physical difference stands out to me, and that's why it's my main suspicion. also, 'born with a rare and sad disease' is another line that solidifies this to me more, since most disabilities are considered 'rare' and 'sad' despite being extremely common, and only a matter of luck.
'but at the rate she was goin', she wasn't goin' far' could be referring to the demands placed on those with physical disabilities- hamantha could be unable to do everything asked of her, leading to missed practice time. also 'so greedy we wanted more' is another line that could be referring to these demands.
the father seems like a misguided and non-disabled parent of a child with a disability- directing the energy of his anger at 'god' instead of towards helping his daughter or finding accommodations for her.
the darker tone is intensified with the doctor's scene- where i theorize that the doctor saw her case as more of an experiment than finding a way to actually help, as well as the ableism in the medical institution and society (the form of apology towards the family specifically being a ham, which might be distasteful to those suffering that disability.)
