The Killers – My Own Soul's Warning lyrics
[Intro]
I tried going against my own soul's warning
But in the end, something just didn't feel right
Oh, I tried diving even though the sky was storming
I just wanted to get back to where you are

[Verse 1]
If you could see through the banner of the sun
Into eternity's eyes like a vision reaching down to you
Would you turn away?
What if it knew you by your name?
What kind of words would cut through the clutter of the whirlwind of these days?

[Pre-Chorus]
I tried going against my own soul's warning
And in the end, something just didn't feel right
Oh, I tried diving even though the sky was storming
Thunder heads were forming

[Chorus]
But then I thought I could fly
And when I hit the ground
It made a messed up sound and it kept on rattling through my days
Cutting up the nights like a goddamn knife
And it got me thinking no matter how far
I just wanted to get back to where you are

[Pre-Chorus]
I tried going against my own soul's warning
And in the end, something just didn't feel right
Oh, I tried running from the memory and the morning
But the penalty kept on pouring

[Chorus]
And now I think I know why
'Cause when I hit the ground
It made a messed up sound and it kept on rattling through my days
Cutting up the nights like a goddamn knife
And it got me thinking no matter how far
I just wanted to get back to where you are

To me this song represents several things, and among them trusting one’s gut is the most important lesson, and another is losing a loved one or close family member like a parent or spouse. Flowers, the frontman of The Killers and songwriter for this lost his mother to brain cancer in 2010, and I feel this is relevant to understanding the song b/c in the video for caution it talks about the “featherweight queen” whose mamma was a dancer b/c, “When you live in the desert that’s what pretty girls do.”

I believe the featherweight queen is his mother since the lyrics and scenes in the video allude to that in Caution which is closely related to this song. One subtlety in both videos is the names on the couple’s chair in the kvideo: C. MOORE (man) and N. Moore (woman) which I believe stands for the old man wanting to see more of his wife who’s “no more.”

This song really resonates w/ me as I lost my father, and the lyrics make so much sense for that instead of a break-up or divorce b/c the part, “I tried to forget the memory and mourning, but the penalty kept on pouring,” means to me that he tried to bury the memory of his mother’s death deep down while trying not to mourn her loss, but his mental health suffered for it. If it were a breakup, I feel it would be memories instead of memory, and the video doesn’t make sense for a break-up. Another part that really caught my attention was the first chorus, “ I tried going against my own soul's warning; But in the end, something just didn't feel right; Oh, I tried diving even though the sky was storming; I just wanted to get back to where you are.”

A lot to unpack, but the first two verses seem to represent going against his gut feeling and then being reckless by sky diving while it was storming as he wanted to get back to where she was, most likely heaven in his eyes.

This song resonates w/ me and my gut feeling that I ignored for almost a year that something was seriously wrong my father and that he would pass sooner than later, but every time I thought logically about it I always went back to all the doctors he saw telling him he was, “...better than he thought,” despite us telling them he wasn’t. I started doubting my gut and eventually ignoring it. I ended up breaking down in tears at a friend’s house saying he was going to die soon. That was six weeks before he passed. And I felt like I was too late in listening to my gut b/c my father died alone in the hospital due to COVID restrictions one day before hospice that I’d arranged was supposed to come take care of him.

My last paycheck was $2500 for working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 8k for months now and she works about 30 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. The potential with this is endless. This is what I do...

this song clearly is about listening to the Lord words..."your soul is his sprit/ advisor telling us what is right and what is wrong" "a counlser" you know what is right and what is wrong that is why he wants to get back to where you are "ground zero" one with the Lord.
