Zac Brown Band – Highway 20 Ride lyrics
I ride east every other Friday but if I had it my way
A day would not be wasted on this drive
And I want so bad to hold you
Son there's things I haven't told you
Your mom and me couldn't get along

So I'll drive
And I'll think about my life
And wonder why, that I'll slowly die inside
Every time I turn that truck around, right at the Georgia line and I count the days and the miles back home to you on that Highway 20 ride

A day might come you'll realize that if you see through my eyes
There was no other way to work it out
And a part of you might hate me
But son please don't mistake me for a man that didn't care at all

And I'll drive
And I'll think about my life
And wonder why, that I'll slowly die inside
Every time I turn that truck around, right at the Georgia line and I count the days and the miles back home to you on that Highway 20 ride

So when you drive
And the years go flying by
I hope you smile
If I ever cross your mind
It was a pleasure of my life
And I cherished every time
And my whole world
It begins and ends with you
On that Highway 20 ride...

Wyatt Durette was inspired to write "Highway 20 Ride" while driving along Interstate 20 between Atlanta, Georgia and the Georgia/South Carolina state line in Augusta, Georgia to drop off his son, Wyatt iv, so that his mother could pick him up. Durette told Country Weekly magazine that, during one such trip, he began to think about "how [Wyatt IV] would perceive [him] as a father."After he showed some of his lyrics to Zac Brown, Brown helped Durette finish the song.

Its about the sadness an helpessness a man has to go through when things don't work and had to split trying to start all over again but there is a son and his heart breaks for not having him every day, missing being a father and at the same time feeling that you are letting down your kid, afraid how he is going to judge you when he grows up. Will he understand or hate you for the rest of your life?

I actually heard this song for the first time the other day. My ex and I share custody of our daughter, but we live a whole state apart. I heard this song on the four hour ride down there and broke into tears. This song really hit home for me, and every Sunday when I drive down there, whether it be to pick her up or drop her back off, I will play this song and cry. My little girl is eleven months, and I know when she grows up and starts school I will get to see her less and less. And like the song I'm sure I will slowly die inside.

This is one of the best songs I have ever heard on the situation it is about. I do this as well every other Friday and feel that the court systems that set these standards just don't care what it does to the kids involved. If there's anything I want more in life it is more time with my sons. They mean the world to me and has been made aware the mother wouldn't care for them to live with me if they could continue to get the support payments.

I'd really like to hear what other people think this song, because I can't decide what it is exactly that he's talking about. Its a really good song and I cannot stop listening to it, I just can't figure out what exactly he's talking about. Is he talking about maybe his child? Or to his child? Or maybe to his woman? Or somebody that used to be his woman.? I just can't decide. Input please!
