Tyler Childers – Follow You To Virgie lyrics
[Verse 1]
Back before these calloused hands and all this work
We used to sit up at the flats
Actin' like we'd live forever
Gettin' high and skippin' class

[Verse 2]
Yeah, I reckon we were heathens
But in her eyes we were saints
Now you're callin' all the boys home
'Cause heaven's angels carried her away

[Chorus]
So I will follow you to Virgie
Although it hurts me so
To lay to rest this mountain beauty
That the Lord's called home
I can see her up in glory
I can see her through the pines

[Verse 3]
Back when all us boys were tryin'
To make sense of all these strings
I can see her in the corner
Singin' along to all our crazy dreams

[Chorus]
AndI will follow you to Virgie
Although it hurts me so
To lay to rest this mountain beauty
That the Lord's called home
I can see her up in glory
I can see her through the pines

[Verse 4]
I will follow you to Virgie
'Cause that's what us boys are for
To help you out when you get weary
And you can't go no more

[Outro]
And can't you see her up there, Cody
I can see her through the pines
Sayin' "Boys be good"

Virgie is a town in Eastern KY, I'm from there. And Cody is his cousin. The song is about the Mamaw Johnson. I see Tyler all the time in and around town. He looked up to his mamaw cause she was the backbone to his life and she believed in him through everything.

Wow some of these answers are wayyy off lol. Virgie is a town in eastern ky, I grew up there so yeah I’m absolutely positive about this, and the song is about Cody’s grandmother who was an amazing lady. So guys please stop with the Virgin Mary and or Heaven interpretations lol it’s just a little old hick town in Kentucky and I’m damn proud of that!

I believe that the lady in question was one of the boys grandmother. I seem to recall that Tyler mentions this on the video from the Red Barn Sessions even though it is omitted from the audio on the CD. I think he said that she allowed them to hang out at her place to practice when they were learning to play.

it was Cody’s grandmother and the term Virgie is a town in southeastern Kentucky . i could be mistaken but i think the town is somewhere between paintsville and pikeville on the country music highway ( 23 ) . a lot of country music stars have come from this particular stretch of highway

Song about a woman who seems to have been around during his childhood when he acted like a heathen boy with his friends. She looked after the group of boys and liked them through their foolishness and encouraged them to chase their dreams. But, she has recently died and has called all the boys (now adults) back to the land that they once lived to remember her! Cody is one of the boys in the group and is likely the son of the woman as he is mentioned at the end of the song “can’t you see her up there Cody”.

I am not from Kentucky and never knew that there was a town named Virgie however, my interpretation of it was about the virgin Mary, 'Virgie' for short. When he says "Although it hurts me so, Lay to rest this mountain beauty". Mountain beauty, in my mind, is a girl he looks upon with lust and is sinful with. Even though it hurts him to leave he knows he must do so.
"Cause that what us boys are for" is an interesting saying because it's as if they are the ones that keep him from doing good and going down "wrong path" yet they are there to help him when he needs help keeping him sane. It's a song about the mistakes make in life and yet we are drawn back to religion always trying to do our best but never wanting to.

Virgie is a town in Pike County, Kentucky ... and this is, of course, in honor of somebody's grandmother ... evidently Cody's and possibly Tyler's as well, since there is anecdotal evidence that Cody and Tyler are cousins ... at the very least they grew up together and this grandmother figure was kind and supportive of them during their wild, teenage days.

The follow you to Virgie is a metaphor to following the woman to heaven. I think it must be his mother and Cody is his brother. Assuming this woman was around in his childhood, he most likely is talking about his mother/ his and Cody’s mother. At least that’s how I envision it because of past dealings. Whatever it means to you, it’s a damn good song
