Surf Curse – Freaks lyrics
[Verse 1]
Don't kill me just help me run away
From everyone I need a place to stay
Where I can cover up my face
Don't cry, I am just a freak
I am just a freak
I am just a freak
I am just a freak

[Verse 2]
My head is filled with parasites
Black holes cover up my eyes
I dream of you almost every night
Hopefully I won't wake up this time
I won't wake up this time
I won't wake up this time
I won't wake up this time

The message of this song is simple and complex at the same time and its not visible by just skipping through the lyrics. The lyrics are very bold and stand out , leaving you to overlook the lyrics and find the message. If looking deeper into the meaning you realize that the song deals with suicide and insecurity. In the beginning it says "Don't kill me, just help me run away" as he is talking to the other half of his brain telling him to end his life, and the other half of his brain telling him to stay alive and just get out of the situation. It's a battle with your constant mental health. The song continues its message later on saying "I dream of you almost every night. Hopefully, I wont wake up this time" . He is facing complications with the relationship that he is in, leading him to exhaustion and insecurity and suicide thoughts.

I think this song has a lot to do with feeling out of place and wanting to leave to feel free. It says “don’t kill me” because the escape is just leaving. This could also be perceived as a love song because this song could be sang to a love interest. “help me run away” could be taken as “come leave with me” and “i dream of you almost every night hopefully i wont wake up this time” to me, means never wanting to wake up from the dream of “you” meaning to be with that person forever. Again, these are just my opinions, obviously i didn’t write the song.

With this song for me I don’t really think it’s about suicide,I think it’s about loneliness and wanting to escape to an imaginary world. The line ‘I dream of you almost every night’ indicates that the writer of this song is lonely and is missing someone who is fictional or real.
The line after it ‘Hopefully I won’t wake up this time’ makes the listener think that the writer prefers the dream world to the real world as they can be with the person in the line above. In the last three lines of the song ‘ I won’t wake up this time’ is made to make the reader think that the writer is determined to stay in their imaginary world with their real/imaginary person. Overall it’s a good song but the lyrics make you think quite deeply about everything generally. I feel like I can relate to this song on a personal level because I have moved schools and I feel quite lonely and I also keep dreaming about this person so that’s just how I see the song.

I would say this song is a reflection of dealing with your own self-mental confliction of suicidal thoughts battling your inner emotions. While it can be easy to glance over, I would say if you relly read over the lyrics you can see that the song expresses a confliction of emotions in your own mental battle.

I don’t honestly think this song has anything to do directly with suicide, relationship complications, and even though it seems like it would almost be written I. Stone that it has something to do with mental health, I don’t think that’s it…..I think it’s just a song, about growing up in a world full of people who you feel like giu will never be accepted by, and the toll it takes on young people to have to go through such a superficial, and artificial social climate….it’s a simple song with very straight forward lyrics….that is extemely relatable and says so many different things, bc it’s analyzed by so many different people relating to it for the same reason…there’s gotta be a word for that

    Sometimes we want to runaway
    Cover up our faces
Find a quiet place to hide
    And cry

    Full of feelings on inadequacy
Thinking there is something wrong in our heads
    Our eyes covered in darkness

    We dream of better things
    A better life
One full of happiness and joy
We don’t want to wake up from it

How do we make those dreams a reality?

    Running from our problems
    Hiding
    Crying
    Doesn’t seem to help

    Perhaps we need to accept
    Our inadequacy
    Our failures
    Our shortcoming
And then we can move forward
Building upon what we do have

    Accept the fact
That I am just a freak
    And that’s ok
For tomorrow I can be a slightly better freak

I know this song is saying that about his life he wants to commit suicide and the part about the black holes in his eyes were about getting possessed and don’t wake up this time is about he wants to be paralyzed and dead there is more but no time

I feel like this song is about someone who feels like a total outsider and just wants to escape it all. He wants to die but at the same time, he knows he doesn’t and he just needs an escape. He knows he is mentally unstable. His dreams are about someone he loves but lost, and he wishes to never wake again so he can be with them. He doesn’t think anyone will worry about him because he’s “just a freak” but wishes he had somewhere he could feel safe and loved. Overall, this song strikes me as a story about a mentally I’ll kid suffering from abuse.

I feel like the song is about a relationship because when he sings "Don't kill me just help me run away
From everyone I need a place to stay, Where I can cover up my face, Don't cry, I am just a freak." He is telling her don't cry because it's his fault because he is a freak and those thoughts are stuck in his mind-"Black holes cover up my eyes
I dream of you almost every night." and this shows it.

I think that they are fighting emotions that are very hard too explain. Involving suicide they only wanna be with people that think of them as a nice person. Not with the people who consider them a freak. They are considering themselves as a freak because people call them that. Which brings bad thoughts.
