John Michael Talbot – Be Not Afraid lyrics
1.
You shall cross the barren desert, but you shall not die of thirst.
You shall wander far in safety though you do not know the way.
You shall speak your words in foreign lands and all will understand.
You shall see the face of God and live.

R.
Be not afraid.
I go before you always.
Come follow me, and
I will give you rest.

2
.
If you pass through raging waters in the sea, you shall not drown.
If you walk amid the burning flames, you shall not be harmed.
If you stand before the pow'r of hell and death is at your side, know that
I am with you through it all.

3.
Blessed are your poor, for the kingdom shall be theirs.
Blest are you that weep and mourn, for one day you shall laugh.
And if wicked men insult and hate you all because of me, blessed, blessed are you!

This powerful song is meant to help you to realize that jesus is walking next to you, carrying you even, in your times of trouble. It is much like the story of a man and jesus walking in the sand. There will always be footprints in the sand where god walks, and those footprints are the absence of evil. In those footprints you find happiness and joy and safety. Always remember this song in times of great pearl, for it will strength your site of god. Amen.

The late kensington rev. Gage use to sing this song on sunday service when I attend his church in my youth. I never fully understood the lyrics or why the rev. Sang it with such passion. Decades later I helped when I became a schoolcop I helped frame an innocent child. When I needed the courage, strength to me stop my quivering knees as I confessed yrs later to the phila special victims, this song & the vioce of rev. Simging this song has helped me to keep going forward & not recant my confession. Rev. I learned.

You shall speak your words in foreign lands, and all will understand. This means that if you as a person or traveling and preaching the Word of God, that he will give you the words to speak, and because of that. People will come to believe in God. I believe this can be applied in everyday life. If you know of someone that is interested in religion, you can tell them about your faith by quoting a favorite bible verse. I have actually done this with my twin brother, he was interested in rejoining the catholic church, and I think it really helped him decide to rejoin the Catholic faith.

I first heard this Hymn 33 years ago after my husband had been diagnosed with Motor Neuron disease. We were about to go on a trip to England and Europe before he became too ill. I was anxious about the trip and our financial situation. I was devastated knowing that he would die within the next few years. The words of the hymn seemed to be written especially for me. He died three years later and I was left to deal with my family of five children alone. These words have sustained me through those years but always evoke emotions.

By day I'm a general manager of a restaurant and by night I'm a domestic violence assistance volunteer. Many times I've had to stand up to someone aggressive or violent, be firm and be strong. Knowing that god is surrounding me that he is in front of me, in back of me, to my left and to my right, I can do that. God would not let me enter into a situation that was not where I should be, he'd give me every sign he could to protect me. So when my path is uninhibited, I can go in, I can stand firm and face the challenge without and ounce of fear and because of that, I can win.

My son called me and said to come, my mother-in-law didn’t have long to live. When I arrived at her Hospice room, she was surrounded by family. She was laying there with her mouth open, teeth out, totally unresponsive. I leaned down and spoke to her, but got no response. I took out my cell phone where I had recorded the song Be Not Afraid. I held the phone up to her ear and suddenly her mouth started to move as she tried to sing the words. No words came out, but you could tell the music was reaching her. Just as the song ended, she took her last breath and was gone. I felt that the music allowed her to pass in peace.

The voice of rev. Gage singing these lyrics helps to keep me strong as I have with stand pressure applied to me to retract my confession in return for old life back. That old lifes to what I taste with so much less in my life. I made the other posting about rev. Gage & this song. My life after confessing has been a barren desert that I survive thanks to god's word which rev. Gage helped augment in my life.

We used to sing this song in church every Sunday, as a child and also as I was raising my own children. I never understood the power of the words until I was in my 50’s. After enduring years of sexual and physical abuse, surviving several suicide attempts, and 3 attempts on my life by someone else, I realized I survived because God was there with me through it all. I am now serving other women who have been through similar traumas and I am out of money. I get scared sometimes that I am going to lose my house, my car, etc., but need to keep singing this song to remind myself that He is still walking beside me and will never abandoned me. Love over fear. Always. ❤️

I love this hymn. I am grateful for the hymns I have heard so often in church. When I seek quiet times alone this hymn comes to me when I most need reassurance that God is ever beside me, guiding me through difficult times. I visualize the ‘barren desert’, ‘raging waters’ that can be so frightful and believe that God is there, guiding me through.

Years ago, my 2 very young nephews died in a fire. We were living in England at the time. I wanted to return home to take care of my Father who was put in a nursing as my brother & his wife were no longer able to take care of him. I was meeting opposition but felt I needed to do this. When we attended mass that Sunday, this song had me in tears “in the sea you shall not drown”. We did go home and The Lord was with us every step of the way.

These lyrics are inspired by the ancient prophet Isaiah 43:2, + Isaiah 43:19, + Isaiah 41:10, 41:18, 43:5
When a man or woman of Almighty God is fulfilling an appointment in obedience they are asked to do, the God of the scriptures promises them not an easy way but a certain grace that will shadow them along the way.
The Savior who quoted Isaiah often, says this too in Luke 10:19

This song is so profound. It reminds me that God and JC are always with me, especially in times of struggle. It touches a deep cord in me, as I try to always be a strong and optimistic person. But even that takes effort, God's support and grace. Not easy to always smile and keep pressing on. Through this song I have come to better appreciate JC's ever present compassion and support in my life. I cry every time I hear it sung in church.

My husband I have have been having a difficult time recently due to his viewing of porn for the past 2 1/2 years. It has greatly and deeply hurt me. I now have to deal with damage it has done to our marriage and our relationship. All of this is not of my own making. At times the pain is so immense that I don't know how I will make it through or forgive my husband. Today during mass, we sang this song and I started crying. I found it comforting and a reminder that God is indeed with me and he knows I can handle this and overcome it all.
