Jamie Cullum – Gran Torino lyrics
So tenderly
Your story is
Nothing more
Than what you see
Or
What you've done
Or will become
Standing strong
Do you belong
In your skin
Just wondering

Gentle now
The tender breeze
Blows
Whispers through
My Gran Torino
Whistling another
Tired song

Engine humms
And bitter dreams
Grow heart locked
In a Gran Torino
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long

Realign all
The stars
Above my head
Warning signs
Travel far

I drink instead
On my own
Oh, how I've known
The battle scars
And worn out beds

Gentle now
A tender breeze
Blows
Whispers through
A Gran Torino
Whistling another
Tired song

Engines humm
And bitter dreams
Grow
Heart locked
In a Gran Torino
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long

These streets
Are old
They shine
With the things
I've known
And breaks
Through
The trees
Their sparkling

Your world
Is nothing more
Than all
The tiny things
You've left
Behind

So tenderly
Your story is
Nothing more
Than what you see
Or
What you've done
Or will become
Standing strong
Do you belong
In your skin
Just wondering

Gentle now
A tender breeze
Blows
Whispers through
The Gran Torino
Whistling another
Tired song
Engines humm
And bitter dreams
Grow
A heart locked
In a Gran Torino
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long

May I be
So bold and stay
I need someone
To hold
That shudders
My skin
Their sparkling

Your world
Is nothing more
Than all
The tiny things
You've left
Behind

So realign
All the stars
Above my head
Warning signs
Travel far
I drink instead
On my own
Oh
How I've known
The battle scars
And worn out beds

Gentle now
A tender breeze
Blows
Whispers through
The Gran Torino
Whistling another
Tired song
Engines humm
And better dreams
Grow
Heart locked
In a Gran Torino
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long

I have to say I heard the song befor I saw the film and at the time I had no idea a gran torino was a car. But it let me put my own meaning to the lyrics, gran torino was my word for dreams and asperations in life and how hard it is in life to really follow your heart and be yourself no matter what is put befor you or what people say, they are the if only ones, follow your heart, follow your dreams no matter how big or small life is to short and so am I. Brilliant song, brilliant film top banana.

As time passes, our actions at significant moments in our lives, and in those of others, come to define us. Those moments are often linked to specific objects, and as time moves on, the objects also come to define us. When we are no longer around, memories of our actions, and the objects linked to them, continue to define who we were. As memories fade, it is only the sum of those objects that remain.
In the film, walt's life is defined by his actions in the korean war, his reaction to his wife dying and him standing up for thao and his family. He is also defined by his m1 garand rifle, his '72 gran torino and his dog. As time moves on, it will only be those objects that remain.

It means hold on to whats right, and stick to your guns, even when everyone else has given in to the succession of lesser men. Be the man you were meant to be while you still have the chance. A song that really ties into the movie in a way that's just so brilliant that you can't overlook the connection. Walt took a stand in the movie for what's right, and while there are plenty of people in the world who will never see life through his eyes or Thao's, we all have our own times when we have to do whats right. A beautiful song for a beautiful film that deserves every praise you can throw at it.

Life is so hard at times, a stinking hell hole other times. But the hopes and ideals that have moves us on, like Walt in the movie, in spite of our imperfections, are grand, they are noble when they lead us to stand for what our heart knows to be right.
Listening to the song as I write, and like the previous post, I too confess I've listened to the song over and over, and am still captivated and moved.

Some songs and movies sometimes make me cry, and hearing Clint Eastwood and Jamie Cullum doing this song together at the end of the movie was a real tear jerker. The song stands on its own merits, but it's further enhanced by the plot and the ending. I was a fan of Jamie Cullum, unknowingly, because I loved Wheels, and now I am a big fan. Definitely refreshing! I owned a Grand Torino once and it took me back to those years. Fabulous movie. Clint Eastwood does it again.

This song works so well because Clint Eastwood is now an older man, and he is reflecting on his life. Whether it be the part he plays in the movie, or his own life, it's a perfect song. The fact that he sings the first minute of this song, really brings it home. I feel that the part sung my Jamie Cullum could be the younger man, who is perhaps, learning some lessons from Clint Eastwood (the part he plays.)
I also feel that this could easily be a "stand alone" song even if you've never seen the movie, it's a darned powerful, reflective song.

When they played this song at the end, it in a way was pleasantly haunting. I lost my father a year ago in an automobile accident. He was a man who loved people, but wanted people to understand him. This song speaks of what a lot of us humans go through. The simple things in life is where a lot of us put our time and value because they are what harms us the least. He finally obtained friendship in his old life from the people he despised as a young man. Love never fails.

I think it means he's a retired polish american ford automobile assembly line worker and korean war veteran haunted by memories of the conflict and living with his labrador retriever daisy in a changing highland park michigan neighborhood which is dominated by immigrants. At the start of the song it means he's attending his wife's funeral, bristling at the shallow eulogy of young father janovich. Similarly, he has little patience with his two sons, mitch and steve and their families, who show little regard for his grief or the memory of their dead mother. Throughout the song he views his relatives as rude, spoiled and self-absorbed, always avoiding him unless it is in their own interest to pay him some attention. His sons see him as "always disappointed" with them and their families, unaware of their own obnoxiousness. Father janovich tells him that his late wife, dorothy, made father janovich promise to try to get him to go to a confession. He writes janovich off as knowing nothing about life or death, and insists on being called "mr. Kowalski" because he feels he neither knows, nor wants to know, father janovich.

In the movie, father janovic offers walt forgiveness for all the killing he was ordered to do in wartime. Walt cryptically tells the priest that what haunts a man are the things he did that he wasn't ordered to do.
At the end of the film, walt tells thao he is haunted by the very act he was awarded a silver star for, namely wiping out an enemy machine gun nest. Walt tells thao that during the attack he shot a young enemy soldier in the face, even though the kid was trying to surrender. He tells thao the kid was about thao's age.
I think that this is what haunts walt, for it is the one killing he commited in the war that he wasn't ordered to do and thus he can't forgive himself for it. By saving thao from the gang's violence, he can somehow make up for the guilt he feels.
    Great song and great movie!

I think it means someone ruined a very beautiful melody with stupid pompous disconnected lyrics. A terrible waste.

“Your world is nothing more than all the tiny things you’ve left behind”

Huh? What exactly does this mean. The world i currently live is is made up of things i’ve left behind? Do you mean my “legacy” is made up of tine things i’ve left behind? If i’ve left these “tiny” things behind, then they are not part of my world.

These are pompous empty disjoint lyrics the sound really good, with rythm meter and ryhme but actuall are gibberish.
