This Sam Smith's song about loving someone completely, accepting every piece even though that it is hurting you and the pain is quite immeasurable. Sometimes or rather most of the time, love is one of the things that put you in a very vulnerable place and in worst case scenarios, it could break your heart and cause you immense pain. Loving a person who continually cheats is like drinking a sweet poison, it is enjoyable but it is very lethal. I think that the persona in this song is someone who is deeply hurt yet he/she chooses to ignore the pain of losing someone that he/she treasures the most.

I saw a video (or maybe an article) of Sam Smith explaining the song, that it was actually about a real married couple that he knew. And that he wrote it based on the woman's point of view. He wrote the song with a friend that also knew the couple. It's about a woman who knew the husband was cheating on her but still chooses to stay with him.

The wife seemingly forgives the husband and takes it out on his stuff instead and drowning her sorrows in alcohol. But that's an unhealthy compromise. She needs to confront him about his infidelity first before true forgiveness and reconciliation can occur. The husband on the other hand seems to know that she knows and yet exploits her forgiveness. Truly heartless.

Based on my understanding, this is all about a couple who's married years ago. At first, their center of life is each other, they are happy, contented with each other until the guy felt that his wife don't care about her anymore that's why he searched love from other girls. Until one day the girl saw everything, she saw his husband kissing a girl. that broke her heart and quickly escaped the place so that his husband wouldn't know.. She never told that to her husband because she still needs him, she taught herself to ease the pain, that she will keep her mouth shut for the sake of her love to his partner. In the music video, his wife always cry because she thinks there is something missing from her her husband can't find.

Maybe, she reached out to somebody else because he did not realize what he had and took her for granted or because he couldn't accept her for who she was and only realized it after he had lost her. Her heart may well always be with his but she realized she could not live up to his expectations and found somebody else who could accept her for who she was and treat her with respect. Pride and ego can cause the strongest of bonds to break. We all have our breaking points.
