The night that Ally and Jackson first meet, she explains to him that her looks (in particular, her nose) has kept her from success:

Ally: Almost every single person has told I liked the way I sounded but they didn’t like the way I look.
Jackson: I think you’re beautiful.

The main reason she hasn’t found success is that the music industry is very appearance-conscious, or shallow. When she is with Jackson, though, he loves her the way she is, big nose and all.

But shallow has a second meaning. Ally is an honest artist who has something to say, making her message “deep”. In the second half of the film, her manager Rez convinces Ally to begin performing simple pop songs, which are considered mindless and “shallow” by Jackson.

To “go off the deep end” means to lose control of yourself or go crazy, usually out of anger. Ally wants to be judged for her voice, her talent, and her message, not her looks. She’s genuine, and she might be considered crazy for that.

Ally flips Jackson’s first verse and indicates that she sees through the persona of “hardcore rock star” he wishes to portray. Jackson struggles with alcoholism as he tries to “fill the void” left by his troublesome relationship with his late father and older brother.

It’s interesting to note that Ally presents this question to Jackson at a very early stage of their relationship, the night they had met. This leaves Jackson at a point of vulnerability as Ally is able to quickly see the real person beneath the persona that he puts on for the public.

A Star is Born incites the audience to grapple with the question: can any person fill the void in another? Throughout the movie we see Ally support Jackson through his struggles, but she never seems able to fill the void he seeks to fill–in the end his internal battles remain his to fight.

Jackson is a successful superstar at the time of meeting Ally and has seen his fair share of good times touring the world and following his dreams as a successful artist.

However, he faces an array of internal struggles, mainly a battle with addiction propelled by a unstable relationship with his brother and late father. He too longs for change–he wants to break away from his bad habits and troublesome past. He fears himself because he notices the destruction his addiction is causing and realizes that his life will spiral downhill if he continues.

The line “I’m falling” has a double meaning. In the first sense he may be “falling” into his alcoholic tendencies and is getting caught up in his rock star lifestyle. On the other hand, this is a subtle nod to Ally, indicating that he’s falling in love with her. The mirrored narrative throughout the song shows the characters help each other in different ways. Jackson helps Ally propel her career, while Ally helps Jackson with his internal battles.

Cooper’s character, Jackson Maine, poses this question to Gaga’s character, Ally, at a key turning point in A Star is Born. Ally is a gifted songwriter employed at a restaurant, and she occasionally performs at a drag bar. Jackson questions whether she is happy being complacent, or whether she dreams of a life as a superstar. Jack is the catalyst on Ally’s singer/songwriter journey–he compels her to step out of her comfort zone and follow her dreams into superstardom.

Interestingly, Ally’s story in some ways parallels Gaga’s. Lady Gaga (Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) performed at neo-burlesque clubs such as Mercury Lounge and The Bitter End before being propelled into stardom.

“Te amo, mami” is Spanish for “I love you, mommy” a sentiment that refers to a lover of X’s – perhaps his ex-girlfriend, Geneva Ayala, with whom he had a rather complicated relationship. “Hoy” means “today”, and “Dale mami” means “go on,” maintaining this theme of protection and love. To be wrapped up around another person is to be eager to please them and madly in love, matching his claims on albums 17 and ?. Geneva expressed her love for him too, getting a tattoo in his honor, following his death on June 18th, 2018.

Lil Pump’s favorite clothing brand is Gucci as affirmed by his hit song “Gucci Gang”. The high-fashion brand is notoriously expensive and blowing $10,000 would not be difficult there.

Lil Pump is known for flaunting his wealth, typically flexing his clothing, jewelry or cars on social media. As with most rappers, he is typically surrounded by women. In the past, Lil Pump has expressed his love for foreign cars, claiming to have purchased a Rolls-Royce Wraith, an English-made luxury car worth in excess of $325,000.

This is producer Mally Mall’s producer tag. “Arms Around You” marks Mally Mall and X’s first collaboration, as it does for Skrillex and Jon.

This could be an allusion to the moonshine alcohol commonly produced in Southern states such as WV, but given the peaceful and naturalistic tone of the rest of the song, it is probably just talking about about the beauty of the moon in the night sky.

It appears that the “miner’s lady” is actually West Virginia itself, as coal mining has always a huge component of the state’s economy and identity. WV is also land-locked from the Atlantic, and is thus a stranger to the ocean.

Song’s co-writer Bill Danoff claims that even though he had never been to West Virginia when the song was recorded, he became fascinated with the state after listening to a West Virginian radio station (WWVA) while growing up in Massachusetts. Country music is rooted in the Appalachian area, so listening to it on the radio is bound to remind him of his home away from home.

Believe it or not, none of this song’s three co-writers had ever been to West Virginia before recording this song – which is surprising considering it has become the state’s de facto anthem. The inspiration to write a song about West Virginia came from beautiful postcards Bill Danoff’s friend sent him. The “mountain mama” part refers to the numerous mountains such as the Appalachians that run through the state.

The particular country road the song is talking about is Clopper Road, which originates in Gaithersburg, Maryland and leads into West Virginia. Part of this song was written by co-writers Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert to kill time as they rode along Clopper towards a family reunion in Maryland. Ironically, Clopper was made into a busy four lane road years after this song was written.

The Appalachians are a very old mountain system, first formed approximately 480 million years ago and once reaching the heights of the Rocky Mountains and Alps before eroding to their present height.

There was undoubtedly life in modern West Virginia prior to the formation of the Appalachians, but it would have been unrecognizable compared to the modern flora and fauna which presently lives there. The habitat fostered by the Appalachian Mountains is largely responsible for fostering the extant biodiversity.

The Shenandoah River runs through both Virginia and the eastern border of WV. It also runs along the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains just mentioned.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a section of the much larger Appalachians. Only a small portion of the range is actually located in West Virginia, but since the song has more to do with non-specific southern nostalgia the line was included.

Even those that have never been to the state can appreciate its peaceful beauty from afar. For a place to be so close to the Atlantic seaboard, yet have tens of thousands of acres of unspoiled beauty is in itself a modern day miracle. God’s mighty hand made so many treasures here, like the Lost river, Cheat river, Youghiogheny and Cacapon rivers just to name a few. The remoteness of some locations made them unattractive for human development, but prime real estate for God’s footstool.
