Death Cab For Cutie – Grapevine Fires lyrics
When the wind picked up - the fire spread
And the grapevines scene, left for dead
And the northern sky looked like the end of days
The end of days

A wake up call to a rented room
Sounded like an alarm of impending doom.
To warn us it's only a matter of time.
Before we all burn [4x]

We bought some wine and some paper cups
Near your daughter's school when we picked her up
And drove to the cemetery on a hill
On a hill

And we watched the plumes paint the sky gray
And she laughed and danced through the field of graves
There I knew it would be alright
That everything would be alright
Would be alright
Would be alright
Would be alright

And the news reports on the radio
Said it was getting worse
Cause the ocean air fanned the flame
But I couldn't think there was anywhere I would have rather been
To watch it all burn away
To burn away

[Choir singing melodically]

The firemen worked in double shifts
With prayers for rain on their lips
And they knew it was only a matter of time

I take this song to be about acceptance and closure. It seems to be saying that nothing is forever. The love that the young boy and girl share is intense, but eventually burnt out. He lost here, and it will take a "matter of time" (and hardworking firemen) to put out the hurt.
But it isn't full of regret, as he wouldn't want to have spent the time with anybody else.

This song with out of doubt is about death. Look like the end of days, its only a matter of time before we all burn. We all are gonna die and there's no escaping death. Its the impending doom, Death. But I could; nt think of anywhere that I would of rather been to watch it all burn away, The narrator of the song is content with his life He would'nt have changed anything. The child dancing in the field of graves represents the peacful acceptance, She represents innocence, and without sin, and we once were just like her, we had no fear of death for a reason, the thought had to come from somewhere or something.
