Always hated this song (especially the Tijuana Brass version that misses the point totally) until I heard Will Robert Scott sing his version on his early '70s Warner Bros. Album. He's the cowriter of the tune and sings it like he's lived it. The lyrics are pretty straight forward. Two lovers separated, but remembering the joy they gave to each other. Unfortunately they never reunite and the woman dies waiting in vain. Even as she's dying she's holding out for his return... "I will return, I will return". Check out YouTube for Scott's version. Takes on a whole new meaning when you heard him sing it.
