You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to

This is sheer brilliance. You've graduated from the steppes or the veldt, now you can hunt in the boardroom, the smoking lounge, the clubhouse. To do that, you have to get really camouflaged, hence the club tie, the suit, the firm handshake. They trust you, you're one of them, how could you possibly betray them? How easy to backstab.

You gotta strike when the moment is right without

"Death" buys a bike to race around, do his job quicker, cover more ground. "Bike" is interesting, why bike and not a car? I think Tori is saying Death can up his pace, but only to His wants or desires. With a car, you step on the gas, go faster, with a bike, if you want to go faster, you have to pedal faster. You can leisurely tool around or you can pedal like a madman. It's all up to Death.

Hold onto nothing
As fast as you can
Well still pretty good
Counseling 101: "Hold on", "weather the storm", "tough times don't last, tough people do", "If you're going through Hell, keep going". That's how you survive to be able to thrive on the other side of pain and loss and adversity. Tori is mocking this concept, "hold on to...nothing (?)". Futility, ephemeral nature of reality, we live in a dream. Then, after dismissing the struggle of life, she flips and says "Well, still pretty good year." Even with the trials and loneliness and hard times, life is still pretty good.

I came to tell my story to all these young and eager minds
To look in their unspoiled faces and their curious bright eyes
Talk about the wolf and the sheep. The juxtaposition of good/evil, innocence/experience, dark/light is beautiful. Can those "bright eyes" see the menace that stands before them? Does his cold blood chill the room? But here, at this moment, they really are safe. Like Leon in "The Professional" (No women, no kids) or Omar in "The Wire" (I mean, I do some dirt too, but I ain't never put my gun on nobody that wasn't in the game.), he does have a code. A harsh, brutal one, but a code nonetheless.

Classic conundrum. Can a Christian support the death penalty? If you want to execute me (tie a noose), then you're going to have to suspend or turn off your belief (lay their Bible down). Interesting question.

One of Mike Cooley's contributions to Drive By Truckers "The Dirty South", definitely one of my favorite albums. This song is part of a 3 song suite along w/ Boys From Alabama and Buford Stick. All touch on the crime, corruption and dirty dealins in the dirty South. This piece tells the story of an Alabama badass, a gangster, robber, shooter. He knows where the bodies are buried and exudes an aura of menace. Do not fuck with this guy. He's done some time, but it didn't phase him none. Now he's out, got his moll and is giving talks to "unspoiled faces and curious bright eyes". Maybe the JUCO lecture circuit, maybe shopping his manuscript, maybe probation requirement, maybe he got religion (probably not). His girl urges him to say what he's gonna say and come on home to her. He's a bad old man.

too bad at all

I used to have a wad of hundred dollar bills in the back pocket of my suit
I had A. 45 underneath my coat and another one in my boot
I drove a big ole Cadillac, bought a new one anytime I pleased
And I put more lawmen in the ground
Just your badass Southern gangster. Big wad of cash, couple of .45's, flash Caddy, and a deadly history. You can just see him, leanin on his Caddy, black suit, white shirt, cutting a butt, right hand suit coat pocket bulging, eyeing the crates of booze getting loaded into the truck or noting the habits of the armored car guards.

Just a heart wrenchingly sad tale of loss and sacrifice. Marines are usually buried in a Dress Blue uniform so this fallen Marine is "sleepin in your Dress Blues". The parents that lose a son, the wife that loses her husband, the baby that loses a father, the nation that loses a young man, all are brought low with grief and loss and pride and anger. What do the old warriors think? Those men who also were in war and did things and saw things that no body should have to do or see. The plans, the dreams, the life cut short. Watch HBO's "Taking Chance" or read "Letters Home" to get a true sense of the love and sacrifice involved. This tune captures it as well.

Daddy used to empty out his shotgun shells and fill 'em full of black-eyed peas.
He'd aim real low and tear out your ankles
Ahh, the old Southern remedy for trespassers and field pickers and unwelcomed guests. You uncrimp the shotgun shell and pour out the shot, and maybe a little of the powder to lessen the "ooopmf" and replace it with rock salt or peas or beans or rice, uncooked of course. And, viola! sub-lethal munitions. Aim low and put a lil hurtin on the miscreants. Akin to bean-bag rounds or rubber bullets.

They made whatever busts they could, but as the dude says, they didn't get me or my product. Nice little repeated phrase meaning 2 different things. "Take it from me,"=Believe me or listen to me and "They didn't take it from me"=They didn't get me.

This is actually a Jason Isbell tune, written while he was with DBT. He plays it, I don't think DBT plays any of his tunes now. I just caught him at Word Of South festival. Shook hands with George Clinton as well. It was high up on the food chain. He said that his early songwriting was inspired by events that happened to his family and friends, so he's heavy on tales of crime (Never Gonna Change) and alienation (The Day John Henry Died) and feuds (Decoration Day). Never Gonna Change is a real rocker, celebrating hard living and the outlaw ethos and clearly, not changing one's ways in the face of criticism or opprobation.

Pit Bosses are supervisors who monitor the tables, staff and patrons. They have a plethora of hand signals and gestures to silently convey information. This pit boss has made the determination that these 2 guys have reached their winning limit. Unless they were really killing the house, it seems a tad harsh, but hey, he's got to move the song along.

This is the Only Band That Matters in full throated roar. All the elements are together, the exploration of different musical styles( ska chatting (Tell your ma-ma-ma, tell your pa-pa-pa everything's gonna be all right, the swirling organ...), the call to arms (Everybody smash up your seats and rock to this brand new beat, This here music mash up the nation, This here music cause a sensation), the shaming of evil doers (To the coolest Mobsters in Kingstown, With the hardest eyes and the coolest tongue, Is your heart so made of rock that the blood must flow 'round the clock). London Calling was the breakthrough, the revelation, the announcement to the wider musical world that THIS band, and THIS album had changed the game.

The song is homage to some city council dude who committed suicide by shooting himself during a meeting. And there was video. "nice shot" as in shooting himself. And it was very smokey and then the smoke cleared. I think it happened about 10 years ago. What is this 50 word minimum? Too late to meet him bec he's dead.
