Meaning
I think this song is about (if the writer meant it to be about anything specific at all) society's general rejection of religion and faith and the "new" role of the church or religion in modern Western society. Remember, the French Revolution (where the picuture viva la vida on the cover of this album is inspired by) was as much about a revolt against the Roman Catholic Church and religious athourity in general as it was a revolt against a political system (although the rcc was very much a part of the political system as well). I have more points to back up my idea but I don't have time to write them all now, but suffice it say, if you think about the singer as the Christian church (maybe not even specificaly the rcc) and view it in both a historical or morden context, the song does make sense.
