Pink Floyd – Welcome To The Machine lyrics
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been.
You've been in the pipeline, filling in time,
Provided with toys and Scouting for Boys.
You bought a guitar to punish your ma,
And you didn't like school, and you know you're nobody's fool,
So welcome to the machine.
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
What did you dream? It's alright we told you what to dream.
You dreamed of a big star, he played a mean guitar,
He always ate in the Steak Bar. He loved to drive in his Jaguar.
So welcome to the machine.

I believe this song is about their experience with members of the music. But not only is it meant to be relevant to the music industry, but of society as a whole.
They speak of their dreams to become huge a revolutionize music. The big players in the music industry didn't care about their progressive ideas and dreams. But Pink Floyd wanted to truly be different and to create their own unique sound. The industry just wanted them to conform and to sound like popular mainstream musicians before them. That's why they said "What did you dream? It's Alright we told you what to dream."
This is representative of society as a whole. The machine is the political-social-economic systems that are in place and accepted by society. Rather then promoting peoples personal goals and global ideals, the machine teaches people to be submissive and subservient. Just accept the system that was established in the past, we don't need to change anything, just ignore all the shortcomings- that's what society teaches people, or what it tells them to dream.
