The lyrics are interesting to read and digest. It indicates some kind of maturity from the son. The son understands their relationship was not a smooth sailing one ("your wrongs or your rights), but life must go on and they understood each other ("I know your mistakes and you know mine". He assures his sick father that he may take leave and would make him proud someday and it is his turn to "chase the monsters away".

This song is very emotional it touched me deeply. I feel it tells a very real situation of a father and don relationship. The son is saying goodbye to his dying father for the last time. But there still so much they haven’t said to each other openly.
‘You’re Not my father, I’m not your son - says they are now on equal terms as he’s already a grown man, and his father should not be chasing his monsters - protecting him like a child. He can chase his own ‘monsters’ now
To ask his father to close his eyes and sleep for the last time. There is nothing to forgive or forget as both of them have their own faults and differences during the growing years.
It’s a rather sad song of so much love between father and Son. There is a respect there that are things you don’t say to your father and vice versa.. that’s why he said we are just 2 grown men saying goodbye.
He’s asking his daddy to close his eyes…and not to worry, don’t be afraid..and that he would made him proud and he will chase the monsters away. So much love… so little time or no more time to make amends.. sad.

It's actually an unimaginable love between a father and a son. "Close your eyes and sleep, it's my time to chase the monster and while you're sleeping I will try to make you proud"- this is an assurance that the son is making to the dad.
Sadly I can't relate because I wasn't privileged to have a dad while growing up.
